Former Highguard Developer Blames Gamers for Game’s Failure

A former developer of Highguard has accused gamers of being responsible for the game’s lack of success. The recently released shooter game titled Highguard has received mostly negative feedback from the gaming community.

Player activity has steadily declined, and there have been layoffs at Wildlight Entertainment, the game’s developer, indicating that the company is currently facing serious challenges.

Recently, news has surfaced that a former developer, who was among those laid off, accused Gamer of being the reason why the game is regarded as a failure.

One Former Highguard Developer Accuses Gamers of Causing the Game’s Failure

Using his X/Twitter account, Josh Sobel, a former developer at Highguard specializing in Technical Art and Rigging, shared his difficult experience of being among the many employees laid off from the company.

In his writing, he describes how the game Highguard received a negative response from gamers upon its release. He even seemed to imply that gamers were to blame for the game’s failure.

Josh Sobel shared that announcing at The Game Awards 2025 was one of the most anticipated moments of his life. This was because he and his team of developers had spent two and a half years working on the game, and they were finally ready to reveal it to the world.

Initially, he believed that the future of this game would be bright. However, what he ended up with was far from what he had anticipated.

The Bitter Experience of Former Highguard Developer

Many people, especially gamers, have shown negative reactions to the game Highguard. Some even create content joking about Highguard and highlighting how the game received over 14,000 review bombs from players who spent less than an hour playing.

He also talked about online discussions surrounding games like Highguard, Concord, 2XKO, and similar titles, where developers tend to blame gamers for their failures. He believes that blaming players in such cases is a foolish act.

Josh Sobel believes that gamers have influence over the outcome of a video game. He explains that he does not mean to suggest that the failures of the game Highguard are entirely the gamers’ fault. However, in his writing, he does acknowledge that gamers do play a role in this matter.

He stated that all the products reaching consumers, which are intentionally designed to discredit Highguard, have been truly successful in accomplishing that goal.

In conclusion, he shared his perspective on how players are gradually shifting away from AAA studio-created games to prefer multiplayer indie games. They often respond by saying, “But remember, gamers haven’t even given Wildlight a chance.” He believes that Wildlight Entertainment’s developers deserve better treatment than this.
