There will be no Mario and Sonic Special Olympics Crossover Game as the IOC wants to focus on Esports and NFTs.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympics – Currently, the 2024 Olympics are happening in Paris, France. Athletes from different countries are striving to excel and win in their individual sporting events.
Usually, when this event happens, the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series also joins in to enliven the Olympic momentum. However, this game series has not been seen since its last release in 2019. It turns out there is a particular reason why this game has not appeared.
Why Mario and Sonic Crossover Game is No Longer Featured in the Olympics
In an interview with Eurogamer, Lee Cocker, a former developer of the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, revealed the current status of the game series. Cocker stated that the collaboration between Nintendo and SEGA for the series officially ended with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), due to a desire to pursue different paths.
Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation about the end of the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, the IOC is reportedly more interested in NFTs and Esports as the future of Olympic gaming.
Future Plans of the IOC
The IOC recently announced that they will host the first Olympic Esports Games in 2025, with Saudi Arabia as the host country.
Rumors suggest that a variety of games will be featured in the Olympic Esports Games 2025, including League of Legends, Street Fighter, Fortnite, and many more. With the introduction of the Olympic Esports Games, it is still uncertain whether the game Mario & Sonic will be included, as there is no definite information from the developers yet.
That is the information about why we don’t see Mario and Sonic crossover games anymore even though the Olympics are happening this year. What do you think about the reasons given by the IOC?
