The new head of PlayStation, Hermen Hulst, has his own perspective on the presence of AI in video games. The impact of AI on the video game industry naturally sparks both support and opposition. Many believe that artificial intelligence does not enhance, and may even diminish, the creative aspect of the games themselves.
Meanwhile, the opposing side argues that if AI is used correctly, it will shorten the time needed to develop a game. So, which side is this new PlayStation CEO on?
PlayStation Leader Hermen Hulst Discusses Balancing AI and Human Roles in Gaming
In an interview with the BBC, the head of the Japanese home console company expressed his understanding of the dual demands in today’s gaming industry. On one hand, there is a desire for innovative experiences driven by AI. On the other, there is a longing for games that are entirely handcrafted by humans.
For Hermen, maintaining a balance between the two is crucial in today’s video game development. This response certainly comes across as quite diplomatic. PlayStation itself hasn’t explicitly ventured into the realm of AI for game development.
However, this doesn’t mean they haven’t considered researching this new technology for use in video games. This approach is quite different from Microsoft’s, which has already shown more courage in implementing AI in games by partnering with Inworld AI to introduce Narrative Graph, a narrative AI that can create much more complex character branching in games.
Apart from AI, Discussing IP Beyond Gaming
An intriguing topic, in addition to AI, is the future development of PlayStation IPs in other mediums. Examples like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and The Last of Us are already visible, with more projects in the pipeline.
This approach is also being employed by Nintendo, which is bringing various intellectual properties like Mario and Pokémon to the audience, receiving positive feedback. Microsoft has similarly done this with their Minecraft IP recently.
