Creator of Dragon Quest III Reveals Reason Behind Costume Design Censorship in Remake Version

In an exclusive interview, Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, along with Kazuhiko Torishima, former Editor-in-Chief at Shonen Jump, shared numerous intriguing details in anticipation of the release of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. One notable topic discussed was the issue of costume censorship for the female Warrior class character.
Yuji Horii stated that there are numerous restrictions and regulations that need to be applied to elements that reveal too much skin, such as in the costume designs of female Warrior characters.
So, if there are more revealing costumes, the game’s rating might increase. This could be an issue because Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is intended for all age groups.
Western Country Regulations

During the interview, they also discussed how this game is purely fictional and not a major issue, as you immerse yourself in its storyline and take on the role of the main character.
In addition, they also discussed how certain countries are very strict with regulations like these when aiming to sell their games globally. In the past, such issues were never a problem when creating games.
Kazuhiko Torishima also described how obedience can be akin to an all-powerful deity. He mentioned that it can appear to be an act of good when, in reality, it is actually harmful.
Torishima believes that it’s impossible for anyone not to feel uneasy about something. It doesn’t matter if a person feels uncomfortable about something beautiful, ugly, good, or evil; it all depends on the individual.

Torishima also explained how Western countries have a variety of thoughts based on their beliefs and how these influence sex education. He believes that their overly obedient attitude is viewed as a narrow-minded way of thinking.
Yuji Horii discussed how, in the past, Dragon Quest allowed players to choose the Protagonist’s gender as male or female. However, now players can select either a male or female character. This is because the game simply labels the options as Type 1 and Type 2. He was curious about who raised this kind of complaint.
