The Sims series seems to remain the top choice for gamers interested in life simulation games. Its unique concept and highly addictive gameplay have kept it popular to this day. The franchise includes dozens of titles, consisting of sequels, spin-offs, and various expansions.
Previous reports indicated that the developers were working on a new sequel titled The Sims 5. Despite rumors that the game had been in development over the past few months, the project has unfortunately been officially canceled as EA wants to concentrate on developing The Sims 4.
The Reason EA Officially Canceled The Sims 5
According to Variety, it has been confirmed that The Sims 5 will neither be released nor developed. Kate Gorman, EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims, explained why there will be no The Sims 5.
In his opinion, The Sims 4 has been around for a decade and boasts a wide array of DLCs and expansions. Therefore, it would be quite disappointing if everything had to start from scratch with the release of The Sims 5.
Therefore, Maxis as the developer and EA as the publisher have decided not to continue the game with a sequel. Instead, The Sims 4 will be further developed through DLCs, expansions, updates, mods, and also a multiplayer mode that is reportedly going to be launched in an upcoming update.
Planned Project
Previously, there were rumors about Project Rene being developed by Maxis. Initially, fans assumed that this project was The Sims 5. However, it has now been revealed that the project is actually a multiplayer mode that will be a standalone game on its own.
Furthermore, Gorman shared updates about the film adaptation of The Sims, which is currently in development. Margot Robbie, known for her role in the Barbie movie, will be producing the film. The project will be managed by Amazon MGM Studios, with Kate Herron directing.
