Unity Mass Layoffs – Unity is a widely used game development engine among game developers. However, there seems to be unfortunate news from the company behind this engine.
After spending 205 million US Dollars to lay off 25 percent of their workforce this fiscal year, Unity has once again conducted mass layoffs. What is the reason for these repeated mass layoffs?
Is Unity Conducting Another Round of Mass Layoffs?

Reports from employees affected by the latest wave of layoffs are beginning to surface online. This suggests that the company is continuing its process of workforce reduction.
A forum post made by Shanee Nishry, the head of Behavior Package Tech Unity, announced that their entire team has been let go in the latest round of layoffs.
Behavior is essentially a visual tool designed to manage the actions of NPCs and objects within the developed game. According to Nishry’s LinkedIn profile, they initially created this tool during their personal time before it became a core product of the Engine.
Nishry mentioned that they have requested the company to make the tool Open Source, but it is uncertain whether this request will be granted.
Apart from Nishry, André de Miranda Cardoso, who is the Lead Game Designer at Unity, also mentioned on LinkedIn that he was affected by the recent unexpected layoffs.
Employees Receive Emails at 5 AM, Poor Communication?

There are several accounts besides those from Nishry and Cardoso. Interestingly, these dismissals happened quite suddenly. Peter Roe, a Senior Technical Artist with the engine, mentioned that he was laid off through an email sent at 5 AM local time from noreply@unity.
I was affected by the layoffs at Unity today, along with many talented and hardworking colleagues. Although this news is very difficult, I am grateful for the nearly three years I spent at the company.
Even so, I would like to comment on Unity’s approach to communicating these layoffs. Receiving an email at 5 a.m. from noreply@unity informing me that my position has been eliminated and that I will lose system access by the end of the day feels very abrupt and impersonal. Unity should handle situations like this more thoughtfully, especially in difficult times for their employees.

Last year, the company stated that its restructuring program would lead to appealing profit growth and robust financial health. This move is part of the company’s realignment following the departure of former CEO John Riccitiello after issues related to the Runtime Fee.
The former CEO has now been replaced by Matthe Bromberg, who has eliminated the Runtime Fee to regain the trust of the game developer community.
Currently, the company has not yet issued an official statement about the mass layoffs that took place earlier this year. Moreover, layoffs in the video game industry have continued to increase, even though it is only the second month of 2025.
