Capcom Announces Unexpected Remaster For Onimusha: Warlords

It seems like Capcom is in the mood to revamp old IPs. Yesterday they announced a new entry in the Streets of Rage franchise and now they announced a remaster for the first Onimusha game called Onimusha: Warlords. According to the trailer, the game will come out on January 15, 2019, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Onimusha: Warlords stars skilled samurai Samanosuke Akechi and his partner Kaede. The game is set in a fantasized feudal Japan and you are tasked with saving Princess Yuki from the demons that work for the antagonist called Nobunaga. You will fight your way through hordes of demons and have the ability to suck up their souls to restore health, gain special abilities or just because you want to. While playing the game you will be traveling through gorgeous Japanese landscapes and rustic villages that bring a unique feeling to every location.

Although a remaster and reboot of the Onimusha series is welcome, it’s quite a surprise to be sure. The IP was born on the PlayStation 2 and also died with it so bringing it back now is an unexpected move. The games were originally planned to be a trilogy although a fourth one was made later on that was released in 2006. We do have to note that a browser-based game existed called Onimusha: Soul but it’s best to forget that that game existed altogether.

Since it’s a remaster Capcom has announced that they will add quite a few improvements to give players a better gameplay experience. First of all, graphics have been improved. This is a must of course. They have also added widescreen support, support for analog sticks, and an easy mode. Lastly, they also announced that the game will come with a new soundtrack which is a bit unconventional although were unsure how much it will differ from the original soundtrack.

From what we can see in the trailer, the game looks quite alright. It’s a little rough around the edge and sometimes you can definitely notice that the game was made for a different generation of consoles but that is what you can expect with remasters. If you don’t mind the somewhat outdated graphics and the game sounds interesting to you, definitely pick it up as it was a very well-received game on release.
