It’s been three months since the release of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Although it is a spin-off game, the feedback and reviews from players have been overwhelmingly positive.
Not only did it receive positive reviews, but the game’s sales were also quite satisfying. Interestingly, Masayoshi Yokoyama, the director, revealed that this is the first time the Like a Dragon series has sold better outside of Japan.
Speaking to Denfaminicogamer, the director revealed that the highest sales figures were from European countries, particularly the United Kingdom (UK).
“I’m not sure if it’s due to pirate culture or something else, but the game sold particularly well in the UK. From our point of view, we didn’t really create a full-fledged pirate game—we just saw it as a side story to Yakuza.” – Masayoshi Yokoyama
The director also mentioned that the game was developed with gameplay mechanics they had never experimented with before. This success is believed to further encourage the development team to continue daringly exploring new things.
