The director of Stellar Blade, a game developed by SHIFT UP, has received a lot of positive feedback from gamers. Moreover, this game will soon be released on the PC platform, allowing it to reach a wider audience who previously couldn’t play it due to its exclusivity on PS5.
With the success of his game, it seems the game’s Director is interested in creating a new game similar to Yakuza, developed by the team at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
Why the Director of Stellar Blade Wants to Create a Game Like Yakuza

In an exclusive interview with ThisIsGame, Hyung-tae Kim, the Director of Stellar Blade and CEO of SHIFT UP, along with Jaeho Hwang, the Director of the game Dave The Diver, shared some fascinating insights. They both expressed a deep admiration for the Yakuza series, also known as Like a Dragon, developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
It is known th at the two of them have a deep love for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, as if it has become an integral part of their lives. Kim, in particular, developed a fondness for the game after playing Yakuza Kiwami for the first time back in 2016. To her, the game felt like a spiritual successor to another one of her favorite games, Shenmue.
Hyung-tae Kim stated that the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series has effectively portrayed their fictional version of Kabukicho as a representation of authentic adult entertainment.
He also mentioned how Ryu Ga Gotoku succeeded in portraying the term, which is often associated with violence and sexual content, in a way that reflects modern urban culture from an adult perspective. He even compared the quality of this game to that of noir films.
Is SHIFT UP Interested in Creating a Game Like Yakuza/Like a Dragon?

Kim mentioned that he has always wanted to create a game similar to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. However, he currently doesn’t feel confident in developing a game with that theme set in Seoul.
The Director mentioned that the Kamurocho location in this game feels just right due to its unique qualities that distinguish it from what is presented in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. This distinctiveness makes it an irreplaceable element of the series.
Every time a new game series is launched, Kim eagerly anticipates the type of ‘mature storyline’ that will be presented in the game created by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
