Skype is recognized as a video chat software that allows users to communicate with others. This Microsoft-owned program debuted on August 29, 2003, and was initially created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis.

Recently, Microsoft declared that their video chat software program is officially set to be discontinued soon.

Skype Will Be Discontinued by Microsoft After Over 20 Years of Service

According to its official website, the video chat software Skype is officially set to be discontinued by Microsoft on May 5, 2025.

As an alternative, Microsoft provides their latest program called Microsoft Teams for users, which includes features similar to the video chat software. Users can also access Microsoft Teams with the same account used for this program.

Microsoft’s Announcement

Here is the official statement from Microsoft’s website.

“Skype will be discontinued on May 5, 2025. In the next few days, you’ll be able to sign in to Microsoft Teams using your Skype credentials, and your chats and contacts will be available to you soon. Enjoy the features you love about Skype, including free calling and messaging, plus new features like meetings and communities, all in Teams.” – Microsoft

Jeff Teper, who serves as the President of Microsoft 365 Collaborative Apps and Platforms, stated that users of this software will have options and control provided to them when transitioning to Microsoft Teams. He explained that users will be able to transfer their saved chat history and contacts to Teams. This includes files such as images.

As of the announcement date, Microsoft will allow users of the software program approximately 60 days to transfer their data to Microsoft Teams.

At the time the article was written (March 1st), this video chat program was still operational as usual. However, starting from May 5, 2025, users will no longer be able to use the software and will need to fully transition to Microsoft Teams.
