If you use a PC or laptop regularly, you’re likely familiar with the open-source VLC application developed by VideoLAN, which can play a wide variety of video formats.
Recently, during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the developer announced that they are working on an AI feature capable of automatically and instantaneously translating speech into text (subtitles).
No internet connection required

Additionally, the developer stated that this feature can operate offline, meaning it does not need an internet connection. Support is also available for over 100 languages.
This AI feature indirectly addresses a common issue that many VLC users have complained about for years. Users often had to download subtitle files—usually in .srt format from various sources—that frequently did not sync well with the video.
It is not yet certain if this AI feature will be able to provide subtitles that reflect the context rather than just translating the spoken words. It will be intriguing to see how intelligent the AI integrated into VLC will be.
