The Blackout Beta was epic, and now it’s over. You’re sad, we’re sad. Twitch streamers have gone back to Fortnite and you can only watch so many highlight videos. We get it, there’s a huge Blackout-shaped hole left over. Fret not, Blackout launches in about three weeks. In the meantime we’ve got a few suggestions to tide your over and help with those withdrawal symptoms.
Yep, load up that clunky, lovable mess of a battle royale game and think to yourself how lucky you are that Blackout is on it’s way in less than a month. Otherwise, see below.
Dying Light: Bad Blood shuffles the battle royale formula up by pitting only 12 players against one another to see who comes out on top. The game mixes in impressive and versatile parkour mechanics that allow you to scale up pretty much any facade, jump off buildings, and mercilessly hunt down other players.
Add to that a heavy focus on PvE with roaming zombies that allow you to improve your character state with every kill and you get a rather novel BR. Oh and there’s only melee weapons meaning things get pretty damn brutal. Dying Light: Bad Blood is still in Early Access with lots of updates in the pipeline.
Fear The Wolves adopts the usual 100 player battle royale starting formula as well as a generous mix of weapons, attachments, vehicles, and gear, then mixes in actual wolves of the long-fanged bloodthirsty radioactive variety. The map is loosely based on Chernobyl, site of a disastrous nuclear accident in 1986. The wolves are a direct result of nuclear waste seeping into the surrounding ecosystem and they roam in packs hunting down players. Lovely.
Players will also have to contend with radiation, deadly bubbly anomalies, a changing weather system that is interestingly voted on by spectators, and vie to be the last standing to hitch a ride with a heli. It’s in Early Access and needs quite a bit of love and polishing, but should tide you over nicely until Blackout.
Darwin Project is one of those sad wrong place, wrong time tragedies of the video game world. Infused with quality through and through, it’s simply been a victim of bad timing. It was released back in Spring of this year amid a wave of copy-cat BR titles to add to Fortnite and PUBG, notably Realm Royale and Radical Heights to name a few. It got lost in the noise.
Darwin Project flips the formula on its head by introducing a strong survival mechanic. Taking place in the inhospitable climes of the Canadian hinterland, 10 players take part in a stylized TV show. They have to balance the duress of the extreme cold, staying fed, and of course the usual BR killing of opponents.
To mix it up even more, players leave behind tracks which can be followed by others to hunt them down, as well as traps to trick trackers into an early grave. Finally, there’s also a new role called ‘The Show Director’. One player gets to play puppet master and unleash a series of perils onto the map from storms to bombs to spice up each match.
Darwin Project is a great game. Head over and give it some love while you wait for Blackout. Oh and it’s free-to-play. No excuses.
