Nintendo Switch Sells Nearly 20 Million Units

Switch

Nintendo just updated the “Financial Data” section of their website highlighting some big sales from this year. According to the info they added, the Switch has sold nearly 20 million units. Over 86 million games have been sold as well, highlighting a very solid year so far. For perspective, the Wii U sold only 13.56 million units and 102.28 million games throughout its entire lifespan. Considering the Switch has only been out for about a year and a half, it’s pretty impressive that it already managed to outdo its predecessor in such a short period of time.

The top selling Switch game so far is Super Mario Odyssey, selling over 11 million copies. Mario Kart 8 comes in second with a close 10 million units sold. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is 3rd w ith a little over 9 million copies sold.

While 20 million Switch units sold is a noteworthy accomplishment, it will be interesting to see if it can top Nintendo’s highest selling console of all time – the Wii. The Wii sold more than 100 million units!

What’s interesting to note about the best selling Wii games is that 2 out of the top 3 games are Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. These sold massively with the former selling a whopping 82 million and the latter selling 33 million. Given the huge success of these types of games, it’s rather surprising that Nintendo didn’t follow up with a proper Wii U or Switch version. Sure, the Wii U had “Wii Sports Club,” but that was more of a high-res port of Wii Sports, rather than a legit sequel.

If the lack of a 1st party “Switch Sports” title tells you anything, it’s that sometimes Nintendo makes strange business decisions. Despite this, it seems the Switch is doing quite well. Hopefully Nintendo is able to capitalize on its success and continue providing content that keeps gamers wanting more.
