There are horror games, and then there are horror games. You know, the kind of game that made you cry like a little girl or embarrass yourself in front of a friend because you jumped out of your chair like cat getting spooked. It isn’t easy to do horror games right, to put a player into the scene, set a disturbing or creepy mood that can freak somebody out. Many games miss the mark, but there are some that are just piss your pants scary. Those are the games we’re talking about.
11. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
The first game to enter the scariest horror PC games list is “Amnesia: The Dark Descent”. This game was released on the 8th of September 2010 for Mac OS, Linux and Windows platform. Amnesia is included as one of the scariest because both the graphics and the story will give you goosebumps and the jumpscares are scary enough to stop your heart.
10. Condemned: Criminal Origins
Condemned came out in 2005, so its been around for a while. But that doesn’t make it any less scary. Just watch the video. WATCH IT! WE DARE YOU. You have been warned not to play this game alone in the middle of the night.
9. The Evil Within 2
Developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda in 2017, TEW2 is deserves a spot here. So many scary ass creatures popping out of everywhere. Horror game fans will surely have played this, and those looking for a current generation horror gaming experience are recommended to give this a shot.
This game is produced by an Indonesian developer and was hugely scary to the Indonesian gamers who know and played it. Giving this a play through is also a really interesting exercise in knowing what really scares Indonesians, as it is filled with Indonesian ghost lore.
7. Layers of Fear
“Layers of Fear” is categorized as a psychological horror game. Layers of fear doesn’t try to jumpscare you, it tries to creep you the F out. It will likely have you looking over your shoulder at the door behind you… if you don’t want to know why, don’t play the game.
6. Outlast 2
“Outlast 2” is the sequel to the hit “Outlast” and pits you in a first person view trying to basically scurry around without much in the way of weapons and avoid the horrors trying to tear out your bowels. Sounds fun right? The game was released in 2017 and can be played on PS4, Xbox One and Switch. The crazy real graphics and unnerving sound effects only add to the sense of feeling pursued and hunted.
Limbo is on this list? Really? Yes, really. Limbo is a side scroller but damn if you don’t get creeped out or unnerved trying to guide the little boy through the darkness and keep him free of gruesome deaths. This is one of those games that really puts you in the shoes of the character and feel bad for the little guy when he gets torn apart by a spider or something equally horrific. It stays with you after you play.
Released in 2017, “Detention” has simple gameplay mechanics and the graphics aren’t anything like “Outlast 2,” but it does no less of a good job in scaring the jeebies out players. We don’t want to spoil how it does that, so you should just watch the video and decide for yourself if you want to play this.
You know what? Screw this game. This game really, really has a way of getting under your skin. The story and atmosphere is simply unmatched in gaming. Set in a dystopian world where you don’t really know what’s going on, except this boy is trying to reach…something. The journey of this boy and the world he travels in is what makes it so unsettling. Despite being a really unsettling game, it was probably one of the best games period in 2016.
2. Little Nightmares
If you ever felt living in a world where you’re the size of a small rodent compared to monstrous, cannibal humanoids living in a boat that’s basically a butcher shop slash restaurant where you’re the main course, then this is for you!
1. Resident Evil 7
“Resident Evil 7” is a scary game. It is a beautiful game where guts glisten and blood pours in graphical glory. It is a game that takes photorealism and graphics to the next level. If you play this on VR you will probably have an aneurism. Not recommended for the faint of heart. But definitely recommended if you want the crap scared out of you.
