Former Blizzard Leader Discusses Handheld Gaming – In recent years, handheld gaming devices have become increasingly powerful for playing video games. However, the former Blizzard Entertainment boss believes that handheld devices of this kind still do not provide truly comparable value for most gamers, especially when compared to traditional consoles like the PS5.
Reason Behind Former Blizzard Executive’s Suggestion to Buy PS5 Pro Instead of a Handheld Gaming Device
It all started when Digital Foundry, in a review posted on Twitter/X, stated that the GPD Win 5 is the first portable gaming device they tested that delivers performance comparable to a PS5.
Mike Ybarra, a former Blizzard executive, responded to the post by arguing that consoles provide much better value at a lower cost. He mentioned that the GPD Win 5, which is priced at around $1,500, is a great device for playing AAA games on the go. However, he emphasized that the high price does not justify the benefits received by the user.
Ybarra also highlighted that with significantly less money, players can already purchase a PS5 Pro and still have enough remaining to buy games and subscribe to services like PlayStation Plus.
Other Factors Cause Handheld Prices to Rise
Additionally, Ybarra clarified that consoles are often sold under a subsidized model, meaning the hardware is offered at a lower cost upfront. The manufacturer instead recovers expenses through subscription services, digital game sales, and third-party royalties. This approach makes consoles more affordable and accessible to many consumers.
Additionally, he emphasized that most players are unable to spend $1,500 solely on a gaming device. Furthermore, the rising costs of GPUs and RAM could make high-end handheld gaming systems increasingly expensive in the future.
Regarding the age of the products, he believes that current generation consoles such as the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X are still sufficiently capable to remain relevant for at least another four years.
