For the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending June 2025, Microsoft reported a 22% decrease in console sales compared to the previous year. At the same time, growth in Xbox Game Pass has also slowed down over the years.
Amidst these numerous challenges, Microsoft chose to launch some of its biggest games on competitive platforms to boost revenue. Interestingly, it turns out that in a certain region or country, Xbox actually experienced growth instead of facing difficulties.
Microsoft Reveals Improvement in the Xbox Market in Japan

In an interview with Famitsu, Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, mentioned that the Xbox market in Japan has shown a fairly satisfactory performance.
He stated that the total gaming time in Japan has increased by approximately 20% over the past year. This figure includes the use of Xbox consoles, PC games played through Microsoft’s platform, and users of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

When asked for more detailed information, Spencer explained that the growth across all three platforms has mostly been steady and uniform. He mentioned that this development in distribution aligns with Microsoft’s strategy to ensure gamers can enjoy Xbox on any device of their choice.
Seeing this outcome, Spencer is confident that Xbox still has significant potential for expansion in the Japanese market.
“There is a belief that by providing content tailored for Japanese gamers, engagement levels will increase even more.”

The strategy appears to have been set into motion, as evidenced by the announcement of Forza Horizon 6, which will be set in Japan, made at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 a while ago.
These figures do include mobile games; however, Japan is also one of the biggest markets for console and PC games, with approximately 29.7 million console players and 14.4 million PC players, according to the 2024 CESA Game Industry Report.
Japan itself is actually a significant opportunity for anyone with a gaming platform. According to the latest research by Newzoo, Japan ranks as the third-largest gaming market worldwide in terms of revenue.
The market size is approximately 16.8 billion US dollars, coming after the United States, which has a revenue of 49.6 billion dollars, and China, which stands at 49.8 billion dollars.
