The Price of Hollow Knight Silksong Has Some Indie Developers Concerned

The cost of the game Hollow Knight Silksong has raised worries among independent game creators. Released on September 4, 2025, across multiple platforms, Hollow Knight Silksong is priced at $20.

However, for some reason, the price of that game has caused several indie developers to feel worried about the future of pricing for indie games.

Reasons Why the Price of Silksong Game Concerns Some Indie Developers

For some indie game developers, they believe the price of Silksong is set too low. They’re worried that this might negatively impact the overall market value of video games, especially for indie titles in the future. Additionally, there’s concern that this could shift players’ perceptions about what a fair price for games should be moving forward.

One of the game developers who has started to speak out on social media is RJ Lake, the director of the game Unbeatable. On his personal Bluesky social media account, he shared that the game should ideally be priced at $40.

On the one hand, it’s their right to set their own selling price. However, Lake is worried that the release of this game might influence players’ expectations about future game prices, especially when it comes to indie developers.

Considering their main approach is “working without immediate pay for as long as they choose,” and given the fact that they don’t face financial difficulties, it’s quite possible for these developers to set their own selling prices for their games as they see fit.

silksong honestly should cost 40 bucks and i'm not even jokingi won't go so far as to say it's bad it doesn't, but! it will have Effects, and not all of those effects are Good

Other Developers Also Express Their Opinions

Not only Lake, but Basti Art Games, the studio behind Lone Fungus: Melody of Spores, also shared their thoughts on their Twitter X account. They even asked their followers for opinions on what a fair price for their game would be, considering it is priced at only $20. They mentioned that the game has a relatively shorter gameplay duration, prompting discussions about its value.

Additionally, Zwi Zausch, the developer of Dorfomantik, also shared some thoughts. In an interview with Eurogamer, he mentioned that the pricing for their upcoming game, called Starbird, is likely to be affected by the release of Silksong.

It’s widely known that indie game developers often face difficulties when it comes to setting the right price for their games. They have to carefully balance paying fair wages to their team, uncertain sales figures, and unpredictable customer behavior—what makes buyers decide whether to purchase a game or hold back because they feel the price might be too high.
