The Alters’ Developer Responds to Allegations Concerning Generative AI

The developer behind The Alters has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the use of generative AI, particularly in the gaming industry. Many gamers oppose the implementation of this technology by game developers.

And now, there are suspicions that the game “The Alters,” developed by 11 Bit Studios, incorporates Generative AI. The studio has finally responded to these claims. What is their response?

Developer The Alters Responds to Allegations of Using Generative AI

The response from The Alters’ developers came from a statement shared on their social media account last Monday, where the studio clarified the suspected use of Generative AI.

In a lengthy statement, the developers of The Alters clarified that they do indeed utilize Generative AI, but specifically in the context of Work in Progress (WIP) during the game’s development process.

“We have observed numerous accusations regarding the use of generative AI content in The Alters, and we believe it’s crucial to clarify our approach and provide you with additional context.

AI-generated assets were strictly employed as temporary work-in-progress elements during the development process and in a limited manner. Our team consistently prioritizes meaningful storytelling and handcrafted elements as core foundations of our game.” – 11 Bit Studios

The studio later clarified that during the production of their game, they utilized AI for elements like text assets, which were placed as temporary placeholders. These were “accidentally” left in the final release of the game, even though that was not their intention.

Conduct an Investigation Regarding the Mistake That Occurred

11 Bit Studios implied that this was an error. They have thoroughly reviewed the situation and confirmed that this was indeed a mistake. The assets they “forgot” to replace have now been updated.

The studio also believes that they do not want to overlook this incident and they wish to demonstrate that it has a limited impact on the gaming experience.

For other aspects of AI usage, the studio also confirmed that for external films, they employ AI for text translation rather than language localization, and this accounts for only 0.3% of the total text, so the impact is minimal.

However, even after providing an explanation, it seems that the online community remains dissatisfied with the actions taken by the studio, insisting that any use of Generative AI, whether small or large, still involves the use of Generative AI.
