Marvel Rivals Developer Layoffs – With a high number of active players, Marvel Rivals can undoubtedly be considered a highly successful game. The game’s profits are estimated to be quite substantial.
However, amidst all of this, there is troubling news circulating online. Recently, it has been reported that some employees from Marvel Rivals Studio Developer have been laid off. Why has this happened?
Marvel Rivals Developer Lays Off Employees

According to a LinkedIn post by NetEase Games’ Game Director Thaddeus Sasser, he has been let go from the studio today despite the game being declared a huge success since its release two months ago.
“It’s a strange industry. The star of the talented team that gave NetEase Games the hugely successful new Marvel Rivals franchise and I have now been laid off.”
Thaddeus Sasser
According to the details on his personal profile, Thaddeus Sasser has been employed at NetEase Games and has been involved in the development of Marvel Rivals since January 2023. He mentioned that he and his colleagues work in a division similar to research and development.
The focus here is on conducting research and developing concepts for new level design mechanics, gameplay mechanics, and other potential ideas that could be implemented.
He, along w ith the team that has now been laid off, worked at the NetEase Seattle office on this game, providing guidance, strategy, and design direction over the past few years. He described it as an exciting adventure.
Reasons Behind Marvel’s Employee Layoffs

This news has certainly left many fans puzzled and led to speculation that no matter how successful a game is, it doesn’t guarantee that employees’ positions will be secure and safe from layoffs.
And it appears there is an explanation for these layoffs. According to a post by Daniel Ahmad, a video game analyst, on his Twitter/X account, he provided reasons for the layoffs.
“It’s worth noting that these layoffs only affect the U.S. team, not the core development team in China. This is part of a larger reconsideration of NetEase’s overseas investments and studios. The company has pulled funding from several overseas teams in recent years.”
Daniel Ahmad

Based on information from Nick Calandra, a member of the Second Wind team, it has been revealed that six individuals were affected by these layoffs, and it seems like the entire North American division for the game was impacted.
NetEase has not yet issued a statement regarding the recent layoffs. It’s possible that a more detailed explanation will be provided in their financial report, which might be released soon.
