The trend of blocking the Discord application in certain countries continues. After Russia previously announced a ban, Turkey has now implemented the same policy on this social media platform.

Reasons for Discord Being Blocked in Turkey

The Turkish government has restricted access to the social media platform Discord following a court decision, as the platform refused to share information requested by authorities in Ankara.

Upon learning the information, Discord issued an official statement. They mentioned that their team is currently working on a solution to this issue so that Discord can be used again by users in Turkey.

Here is a statement from Discord.

“We are aware of reports indicating that Discord is inaccessible in Russia and Turkey. Our team is currently investigating these reports.” – Discord

Public Outrage

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that there was a complex issue leading to Discord being blocked in Turkey. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) announced this access ban decision on their website.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced that the Ankara court decided to restrict access to the social media platform due to strong suspicions that some users had committed crimes of sexual abuse and child exploitation.

This prohibition arose following public outrage after a 19-year-old man killed two women in Istanbul earlier this month. Social media content revealed that Discord users tended to praise the murder acts.

The Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, stated that the nature of the platform makes it challenging for authorities to monitor and intervene when illegal or criminal content is shared there.

“Officials are unable to access the content. We can only intervene when users report to us about the shared content there. Since Discord refused to share their information, including IP addresses and content, with our security unit, we had no choice but to block access to the platform.” – Abdulkadir Uraloglu

On Tuesday, the Russian communications regulator also restricted access to Discord due to violations of Russian law. This action followed a previous fine imposed on the company for not removing prohibited content, as reported by the TASS news agency.
