Hinterland Delays The Long Dark Wintermute Episode 3

Hinterland, developer of the brutal wintry survival game The Long Dark, has announced that Episode Three of the Wintermute story mode has been delayed and won’t release this December as initially planned. Alongside the bad news, Hinterland did clarify that the Redux versions of the first two already released episodes will arrive by the end of this year as scheduled.

Citing the hire of a cluster of new employees and the acquisition of the equipment from the now defunct Capcom Vancouver’s motion capture studio, a 36 camera setup, Hinterland has pushed back release to make use of these new tools. The six new team members are made of recently-fired Capcom employees including programmers, UI, visual effects artists, and testers. With a few more prospective hires coming from the recently-fired batch of Telltale employees, Hinterland hopes to step up its game especially when it comes to animation and voiced dialogue scenes.

As The Long Dark game director Raphael van Lierop puts it ‘Suddenly having access to all this new development talent and the motion-capture gear makes a huge difference to what we can accomplish in Episode Three. I’ve decided that I’d like to be able to use these new resources — along with the new motion capture equipment — to add more content and polish to Episode Three’.

As for Redux, the release is going as planned with revamped missions, narrative content, animations, and voice overs. The idea is to set a precedent for upcoming chapters as van Lierop explains, ‘In December, you’ll be able to play these Redux episodes and get a great sense of what to expect in Episode Three and beyond, as these now serve as the template for how we’ll approach all our mission and narrative content moving forward’.

Hinterland has yet to flog a firm release date for The Long Dark Episode One and Two Redux, but given December is just around the corner, it’s a matter of week’s before we can relive the adventures of the hirsute bush pilot Will Mackenzie.
