Minecraft Dungeon Crawler Spin-Off Announced

Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, is hard at work on a new entry in the Minecraft universe – Minecraft: Dungeons. As the name implies, the game will utilize Minecraft’s unique aesthetic designs in a “hack and slash” dungeon crawler.

The news came during this past weekend’s Minecon Earth 2018 live stream. If you’re not familiar with the event, it is Mojang’s official Minecraft

convention that has been taking place once every year since 2010.

Along with the announcement, Mojang unveiled a teaser trailer of sorts that gives you a glimpse as to how the game will look and feel. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check it out below.

As you can see, the teaser doesn’t really give any insights into actual gameplay. The official announcement introducing the new title includes everything we do know at the moment:

What exactly is Minecraft: Dungeons? It’s an all-new action-adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, where you’ll constantly discover new weapons and items that will help you defeat a ruthless swarm of new-and-nasty mobs. You’ll fight or flee through canyons, swamps and – of course – mines!

You can brave the dungeons alone, or team up with friends. Up to four players can battle together through action-packed, treasure-stuffed, wildly varied levels, all in an epic quest to save the villagers and take down the evil Arch-Illager!

Minecraft: Dungeons has no definitive release date, though the end of the trailer notes that it will be out on PC sometime next year. According to Lydia Winters, the chief brand officer for Mojang, this title will mark the beginning of “the expansion of the Minecraft universe to new game genres.” Given this to be the case, don’t be surprised if we get more than one new Minecraft title next year!
