Assassin’s Creed Series Will Go On Hiatus After ‘Odyssey’ Release

Ubisoft is taking a much deserved gap year and won’t be birthing a new Assassin’s Creed game or spin-off in 2019.

Having taken a break to produce the excellent Assassin’s Creed Origins, many were convinced Ubisoft had done away with its previous track record of churning out Assassin’s Creed titles on a yearly, if not bi-yearly, basis. However, upon learning that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

was penciled in for release this year, fans of the series voiced their discontent amid fears Ubisoft was returning to old habits.

However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained at Gamescom, as reported by Gamespot, ‘we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year. It’s just because the teams were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.’

In other words, Origins and Odyssey

were developed in parallel rather than in succession by the same team. With this in mind, it seems Ubisoft are staunchly sticking to fine tuning games and completing their grand transition towards fully-fledged RPG adventures. Guillemot said this gives ‘the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to [the game]. The community has been responding very well to it and when I see what we are bringing with Odyssey I know that the community that got back in with Origins will be amazed’. A reassuring piece of news.

When Guillemot was asked whether a spin off or DLCs would surface next year, he said players can expect ‘lots of content’ for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in regular updates spread out over multiple years, but no spins-offs as has been the case in the not too distant past, i.e. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles.
