Gamescom has produced its share of gameplay from the hottest upcoming games. We’ve gone ahead and scoured what’s on offer and picked out a selection of the most interesting ones. Though in no way exhaustive, these five games should get your gamer senses tingling.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Touted as an action-adventure game set during the Sengoku period in Japan, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice packs elements of stealth, all-out gruesome sword fighting, and a seemingly Dark Souls-esque difficulty. The game play trailer provided by Activision showcases an assault on a castle where our hero encounters a selection of enemies including archers, shield-bearers, and beefy-looking samurai. We also witness the unsettling assassination of an elderly monk of some kind. With Ghost of Tsushima

on the way, seems we are in for a glut of feudal Japanese-themed titles.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Though we’ve had plenty of opportunities to preview Assassin’s Creed Odyssey since it was announced back in May, Gamescom has coughed up footage of late game, high level game play. In this particular case, we get a peek at one of the mythical creatures populating Odyssey’s Greek open-world, and it’s none other than Medusa. The boss battle is suitably epic and yes Medusa does try to turn the player to stone. Thanks to Game Informer for capturing the game play.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale: Innocence is an adventure title centered of a fantastical take on the devastation caused by the plague during the 14th century, portrayed by huge waves of rampaging rats that scour the French countryside in search of food to sate their growing numbers. This sequence shows three siblings as they attempt to ward off one such horde using fire. The swarm is spine-tingling in its realism and is downright disturbing. At one point the children are forced to put out a marauding soldier’s torch, and thus signing his death note, to save their own skins. Unsurprisingly, said soldier gets gobbled up by the rats. ’s is pretty damn original though not for the faint of heart.

Biomutant

Stylized as a ‘open-world, post-apocalyptic Kung-Fu fable RPG’ as THQ Nordic puts it, Biomutant is shaping up to be quite the thrilling adventure. Craft your own mutant animal with customizable stats like ability and intellect, as well as a get to grips with a seemingly deep combat system. Fighting is all about performing acrobatic feats while firing off weapons and getting up close for melee hits. Seeing a small cuddly critter perform increasingly outlandish moves looks incredibly enjoyable and that’s without talking about when you get to control of a mech packing serious firepower. Biomutant is visually gorgeous to boot. Gameplay footage courtesy of Gematsu.

11-11:Memories Retold

Moving away from more established and anticipated games, we have 11-11:Memories Retold. Forgive the unusual title because this narrative adventure based on events on the Western Front during the closing act of World War 1 stands out. It traces the path of a Canadian photographer and a German soldier who’s son has gone missing. Voiced by none other than Elijah Wood and Sebastian Koch, these two characters’ interlinked stories weave a portrait of the atrocities of war culminating on the 11th of november when ‘they will face the biggest decision of their lives’. The art style is reminiscent of the blurry conditions of warfare, the mind-numbing violence, and sets the game apart from many other contemporary titles. Though only just announced, 11-11:Memories Retold launches on November 9th of this year.
