While Microsoft is actively promoting the use of generative AI in video game development, it appears that the Minecraft developers do not share the same perspective on this new policy direction from Microsoft.
Mojang, the studio behind M inecraft, rejects the use of Generative AI for game development.

According to a report by IGN, Agnes Larsson, the director of Minecraft, discussed the use of generative AI in their game’s development. She expressed that she is not particularly excited about such prospects for the future.
For them, Minecraft is all about imagination and building new things. Therefore, they believe it’s crucial to add a meaningful and aesthetically pleasing human touch.
“I think it’s important to make us feel happy in creating something as human beings. That’s the goal that makes life look beautiful. So for us, that’s what we want in the team that develops our games.” Agnes Larsson
The executive producer of Minecraft, Ingela Garneij, also added a “specific touch: what is Minecraft? What does it look like?” She believes this is an “extra quality” that is challenging for AI to handle. She also mentioned that their team finds it difficult to work remotely because face-to-face interaction is very important to them.
Is Mojang Different from Other Xbox Game Studios?

Even though Mojang is under the umbrella of Microsoft, also known as Xbox Game Studios, this does not mean they have to comply with Microsoft’s AI policies. In fact, while many other studios are adopting AI en masse, Mojang has chosen not to follow this trend.
This situation is quite different from Call of Duty Black Ops 6, where numerous game assets were created using AI technology. As a result, the game faced significant criticism from gamers who questioned the reasoning behind this decision.
